Philanthropy Chair 101

Planning your chapter's Philanthropy is no small feat -- between all of the logistics of event planning, the marketing needed, and the fundraising goals, it's a big job!
Lindsey Hanks, a senior from UC Santa Barbara Kappa Kappa Gamma has some advice to make it a little easier for you!

The Event

Event: Kappa Kapture the Flag
Attendees: 200+
Our annual philanthropy, Kappa Kapture the Flag, raises money for Reading is Fundamental and the Ovarian Cancer Circle. The event brings the UCSB Greek community together to support these great causes at fundraisers around Isla Vista and ends with an exciting Capture the Flag tournament for Greek houses to compete in.

The Advice

Plan Ahead!
There are so many small details when you're planning an event. To stay on top of them all, get started early! Our philanthropy event was in November so I started planning at the beginning of the summer.
Be Prepared to Problem Solve!
I really tried to be extremely detailed in how I planned out the event so I wouldn’t have to deal with problems at the last minute. I quickly realized that no matter how much you plan ahead, with an event that hosts 200+ people something inevitably will happen that you didn’t anticipate! Learning how to deal with issues as they came up and problem solve in the moment was absolutely key for me.
Remember Why You're Doing This!
The Philanthropy Chair position can be very challenging, and adding the responsibilities that it entails to the schedule of a busy college student can be overwhelming. The best advice I can offer is to stay engaged in the role and remind yourself why you’re doing it in the first place. Most likely, you care about giving back to your community and care about your chapter’s philanthropic missions. These qualities are what make you great for the role and what will motivate you when the job is tough.
Use TSL for Your Apparel!
The best part of working with The Social Life was how personalized the experience was. I was a little unsure of what I wanted and my Apparel Specialist Brooke was so patient with me as we worked through different fonts and colors until we decided on something I absolutely loved. She always got back to me quickly with responses and new design proofs which really made the entire process stress-free.
